Cleaning Rugs from the Middle East
Rugs that originate from the middle and far east are as distinctive as they are beautiful. On this page we look at Persian Rug Cleaning, as well as the techniques used for Turkish, Kilim, and Bokhara rugs. These rugs originating from Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Iraq and many other countries.
Persian Rug Restoration
Originating from the Iranian area, Persian rugs are known for their intricate designs, hand-knotted weaving techniques, and short pile. Persian rugs are distinctive from Turkish rugs in that they are constructed with asymmetrical knots and are non-depressed.
The tight weave of Persian rugs and their open-right pile structure requires that the rugs are sheared and singed to prevent fuzzing (shedding) and then they are chemical washed to soften the wool and increase the sheen of the pile.
With these factors in mind, Prestige Rug Spa washes each rug carefully using rotary shampooing techniques and uses rapid moisture removal to prevent the loosening of fibres or future shedding. Our techniques are as delicate as they are thorough.
Turkish Rug Cleaning and Restoration
Originating from the Turkish area, Persian rugs are also known for their intricate designs, hand-knotted weaving techniques, and short pile. Turkish rugs are distinctive from Persian rugs in that they are constructed with symetrical knots which only leave one node.
As the flat weave structure of Turkish rugs is similar to Persian rugs, kilim, Navajos, dhurries, and soumak rugs, they all share a similar hand washing techniques.
Kilim Cleaning of Rugs and Restoration
Kilim describes any weft-faced flat weave rugs that originate from countires other than India. You may have a Kilim rug from Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, or other countries around Europe and Asia.
When cleaning Kilim Rugs you must thoroughly inspect the rug for prior colour bleeding, exposed warps, and check the rug for colourfastness. If the rug is not colourfast then the rug must be cleaned with low moisture cleaning methods and must be dried slowly with air movers.
Prestige Rug Spa understands these considerations and works hard to ensure that your Kilim rug is taken care of.
How to Clean Bokhara Rugs and Restoration
Bokhara rugs originate from the area that was once called Turkmenistan which includes northeastern Iran, western Afghnistan and Uzbekistan. The name Bokhara is named after the country Bokhara which is now within the boarders of Uzbekistan.
Bokhara rugs use either symmetrical or asymmetrical knotting structures and normally created with wool. Due to their dyeing methods, Bokhara rugs have a tendency to bleed heavily.
Due to the bleeding considerations Prestige Rug Spa checks each rug for colourfastness and ensures that the cleaning and drying process is flat to ensure that dyes do not spread to the fringe. If dye bleed has occurred, we strip the fugitive dyes to reveal the original colours.
